Guest Blogger: Nikki shares her Word of the Year

Guest Blogger, Nikki, is back today with an idea for making your New Year a success.  Nikki is an entrepreneur and owner of Bedhead Designs.  She is a homeschool mom who volunteers in her church and community. She recently helped her husband (and kids) remodel a very old and broken home. Thanks, Nikki, for taking time to share your thoughts with us!

Do you set New Year’s goals? I often set them…and come mid-February, I have forgotten all about them! Last year, I heard about a word of the year, and I thought it was brilliant! I could remember one word all year! Haha!

I hadn’t picked a word yet for this year.  I had all but given up because I hadn’t found one that felt right. Then, I read this amazing article. It’s called A Vow to 'Soften', So Your Loved Ones Can ShineSoften.  It spoke to my very core! Soften seemed to settle right in. When I thought the word, I felt myself letting go, softening.

One of my favorite lines in the article is: “I felt myself being less of a controlling manager and more of a peaceful nurturer. As my inner barriers weakened, my ability to respond more lovingly, more patiently, and more openly grew.” My children are homeschooled.   I love it, but it’s very time consuming, and can be frustrating when you are all things to everyone all the time! I feel this word, soften, is just the inspiration I need to be the mother, the woman, I want to be.  It’s easy to keep one word in the front of my mind. I can see it there, and when I’m interacting throughout the day, it can help guide me. I also plan to think of the things I CAN do. I’m so done with trying to ‘stop’ doing things. It is so hard to STOP, but it’s much easier to DO.  I can soften my tone.  I can take the time.  I can encourage.  I can be there. See how much better that feels? It’s really quite freeing!

This year will be my year to soften my rough edges and to make sure my loved ones know by deed, first, then word, that I love them.  I invite you to try a ‘word of the year’.  I think you will find it a great way to make positive changes in a softer, gentler way. (see, it’s right on the tip of my tongue!)

Firsts of 2015

As each new year approaches I enjoy looking back over the last twelve months to see what I have done differently during the year. I especially like to review what new things I have learned and experienced.  Here is a quick look at 2015.

  • I visited Canada for the first time with a trip to Niagara Falls.  It only lasted about 45 minutes because it was freezing, but it was beautiful and exciting!
  • I published my first children’s book with the help of my granddaughter.  She did the illustrations for Gary Learns to Skate. She was six years-old!
  • First book signing with my granddaughter.
  • First speaking gig about book marketing.
  • First root beer float at the Frostop in Ashton. ( I have had root beer floats before, but I can’t remember ever stopping at the Frostop for one!)
  • First writers contest and event sponsored by the ICAN
  • First appearance in Eagle Magazine
  • First bit.ly link
  • First time I shattered the screen on my iPhone. Very sad!
I would love to hear about what you did for the first time in 2015. Message me in the comments below.
Enjoy your New Year celebration!  Be safe and be happy!

Firsts of 2014

I ran across my post from last New Year’s Eve and as I looked over the list of firsts for 2013 I decided to see if I had done anything new in 2014. I believe in learning new things and continuing to push myself even if I am a granny.  I was surprised to see how many new things I had done!
First nap during the Grand Teton Relay

  • First run in Island Park and …
  • First solo night run.  It was amazing!
  • For the first time I visited a running store to be fit for running shoes. (I know – I tell everyone else to do this, but I confess I had never done this for myself.  So glad I did!)
  • It was the first time I have been to New York state. I’m going back!
  • First Tweet.
  • First Instagram post.

I would love to hear about what you did for the first time in the comments below.
Enjoy your New Year celebration!  Be safe and happy!

A short rundown of the year.

I can’t end the year without reviewing some of my running experiences throughout 2013.  It was a year of firsts for me!

·         It was the first time my daughter and I competed in the same half marathon.  She beat me, of course!

·         I won a pair of running shoes at a race! (Not because I was fast.  Lucky ticket number!)

·         It was the first time I have had a sweatshirt with the words “Coach Green” on the back.

·         I left flesh on the pavement during a workout – for the first and hopefully last time.

·         The first time I went for a run in Jackson Hole,WY.

·         The first time I had someone recognize me and say, “You’re gonna think I’m weird, but you are Running Granny Green!”  Thanks Jodi!

·         First iPhone which translates to, “First time tracking a workout on MapMyRun.”

There are certainly more, but this is the first time I have posted on New Year’s Eve and I think it’s time to start the celebration!

Have a Happy and Safe New Year!
